OUR STORY

APA boasts a rich history, starting all the way back in 1998 as a collection of branches in the South of England, teaching thousands of students before making the voyage to Australia! APA as we know it was founded by husband-and-wife team Gareth and Louise Henderson. Gareth is an internationally successful vocal coach, and one of the few ‘Vocology in Practice’ authorised instructors in the world. Louise has been a professional choreographer and performer for 25 years, with over 30 certifications in various disciplines of dance. In 2021, alumni of the academy and WAAPA graduate Saskia Glass stepped in as Artistic Director, and has been enjoying bringing her flare for fun & all things spectacular to the choir’s concerts ever since!

APA alumni have gone on to study at leading tertiary institutions, perform on the West End, score Recording Contracts, and become brilliant vocal coaches themselves. The sky’s the limit for students of the Australian Pop Academy!

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission at APA is to help young performers develop their vocal & movement skills, artistic flare and confidence, in an encouraging and supportive space.

APA JUNIOR CHOIR (7-11 yrs)

Our junior choir works towards a parent viewing at the end of each term, where they have the opportunity to perform songs spanning the pop, rock, and musical theatre genres to their families. Over the course of each term, they learn lyrics, choreography, and are introduced to singing in harmony with their peers.

APA MAIN CHOIR (12-18 yrs)

Our main choir works towards two high-octane concerts each year, presenting songs they’ve learned over each semester to a live audience. Students are taught choreography and a range of impressive harmonies as a group, composed by our tutors to current and classic Pop, Rock, R&B and Musical Theatre songs. If they wish, they are also presented with the opportunity to audition for solo parts in a supportive environment.

APA IN THE COMMUNITY

Our choir has been invited to perform at various local venues and events, including but not limited to Alzheimers WA Memory Walk, Westfield Carousel, the Astor Theatre, Murdoch’s Nexus Theatre, the Rosemount Hotel, Mandurah Performing Arts Centre and Margaret River Heart.

The Australian Pop Academy has blossomed life-long friendships, as our students have the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and work as a team to create show-stopping performances.
